Research Center to Focus on Trail of Tears
Published Feb 29, 2008

It was a historic event that still has many unanswered questions today.

The Trail of Tears in 1838 involved more than 15,000 members of the Cherokee, Creek and other tribes, all forced from their homes and removed to camps to make way for white settlement. From there they were escorted to Ross’s Landing in Chattanooga (pictured) and two other departure points to begin a long westward journey to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. An estimated 4,000 tribal members died in the camps or en route.

U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga was the primary sponsor of a bill approved by Congress in 2006 to study the routes taken when the U.S. government forced the tribes from their land. The law also calls for an education and research center to inform the public about that chapter in history.
