Business at BC Machining in Brassville, N.C., has been growing, and owner Bob Merrill expects to do more than $1 million in business in 2009.

The advanced machining company got off to a fast start when it opened in late 2007. It did some work for Team Industries, which specializes in automotive parts, and counts Snap-On Tools – Merrill’s former employer – as a major customer.

BC Machining has expanded its reach to a defense contractor in Syracuse, N.Y. It also is making aluminum tourniquet handles for a medical supply company.

The Clay County enterprise has seven employees, a 5,000-square-foot building, and high-speed milling machines, drills and tumblers for working with metal. Merrill wants to focus on aluminum and the aerospace industry, and BC Machining expects to get the industry’s stamp of approval – AS9100 Certification – in 2009.

“That is where we are focused – more of the defense business,” Merrill says. “We want to become very focused and very good at one thing.”
