Hiwassee or Hiawassee, It’s a Beautiful River
Published Feb 29, 2008

The Tennessee Valley Authority built and operates 29 hydroelectric dams in the seven states it serves.

On the Hiwassee River, there are dams in three locations. The Apalachia Dam, Chatuge Dam and Hiwassee Dam were
all built in the 1940s, with the Hiwassee Dam (pictured) being the tallest of TVA’s dams at 307 feet high.

By the way, the Hiwassee River is spelled Hiawassee in north Georgia at its headwaters in Towns County. It flows northward into North Carolina where is assumes its more common moniker of Hiwassee.
